Last year I made a habit of writing (even just a couple sentences) every weekday. It’s been an amazing experience and I’m so glad I did it (I didn’t miss a single day).
As the new year approaches, I’ve been thinking about the habits I’ll improve on, and the new habits I’ll form.
For writing, I’ll add a 20-minute timer. I don’t have to write the full 20 minutes, but I do have to start the timer every time.
I currently have a habit of exercising every day. This can be any sort of exercise, even just a few pushups or jumping jacks. To improve on this habit, I’m going to add a bench and some dumbbells to my office and start lifting weights. It can be any amount of time, but I have to move some weights around.
Last year I started making paper prototypes for my game ideas. This year, I’m going to paper prototype every day. This could be iterating on an existing idea or creating a new one. Again, the duration doesn’t matter.
Out of these 3 changes, my priority is the 3rd one.
In the explore/exploit tradeoff, I feel I’m not good enough at exploring. Improving my ability to prototype is the first step in improving my ability to explore new game ideas.
If you have new habits you’d like to implement this year, feel free to share in the comments.
Thanks for reading,
Ben

Great post.
This upcoming year, I have a few new habits to add to my daily life:
- Animate a pixel art piece a day. Even if it's a simple ball.
- Play around with Godot every day. Even if I just make a simple moving sprite or UI mockup.
I have a few more, but I think I'll stick to those two so that I don't put too much on my already full plate, haha.
